When I was working in a very stressful role in Corporate Health, my body finally said very loudly “Enough of this folly!”. My blood pressure went through the roof and I ended up having a complete nervous collapse, ending up with chronic fatigue requiring bed rest for 8 months. Fortunately for me, I had someone come to the office and share Resperate with me. I thought it was a great device, well backed by research and introduced its use into our Health Expos. My plan then, and I still see this happening in due time, was to create relaxation rooms for employees and Resperate, among other things, would be available for employees to use when they needed to chill out. When everthing went pear shaped, I had the Resperate to help calm me down (I also developed anxiety and panic attacks). It was such a blessing. I really believe in this product, particularly where stress is a factor in your health issues. Many people, like me, have high BP that does not repond particularly well to medication, and it is very important for our health that BP is as normal as possible.
Using the Resperate is very relaxing. It uses musical notes, initially that change in time with your breathing and then gradually the notes go for longer, and your breathing slows. They say that if breath rate goes down to under 7/minute for 10 minutes or so the autonomic nervous system relaxes. Its like the Resperate pulls the stress out of your body. But there’s more to it than that. The biofeedback device that is strapped around your chest monitors whether you are listening and timing your breathing to the notes. Often people’s mind can wander, even without them knowing it and their breath rate increases. They find themselves thinking about how horrible and mean the neighbour was about the dog barking, concern over the daughters new boyfriend blah blah blah…that stinking thinking has major magnetism…When this happens the Resperate picks up that you are not listening and concentrating and has all sorts of strategies built in to “wake you up” and bring you back on track. While the Resperate has been proven to lower blood pressure, I belive that is just one of the benefits of learning how to spend 15 minutes a day doing nothing but breathing. It is a way to meditate and chill out for the everyday man.
